Full Day Tour

Port Douglas – Cooktown:

Departs 7am – Returns approx 5.30pm:

An early start, around 7am finds us heading up the Rex range towards Mt Molloy were a quick visit to the local cemetery finds among others, the final resting place of James Mulligan (Miner and Explorer).

We then head North along the forenamed Mulligan highway, a stark, rugged dry landscape covered with termite mounds and gum trees. A stop for morning tea at the Palmer River Roadhouse is a good time to stretch the legs and take in a bit of the history from the Palmer River Gold Fields in 1873. Heading north once again we stop to take in the ‘Mysterious Rocks’ on Black Mountain.

After a short drive we reach our destination Cooktown. Rich in history as the place Captain James Cook repaired his boat the HMS Endeavour after running aground on the Great Barrier Reef in 1770.

Our first stop in Cooktown is Grassy Hill where Cook used its height to chart his way back out through the reef on his departure. Next we meander through the historical main street before settling down for lunch at an eating establishment beside the Endeavour River.

The cannon and anchor left behind by Cook can be found at our next stop the James Cook Museum, after having been found and raised from the waters around the reef in 1970 (200 years to the month Cook cast them overboard in order to get his boat off the reef).

Brimming with artefacts, information and captivating stories from Cook and his men’s survival on the reef- to the richest alluvial gold rush in Australia. The last stop in Cooktown is the cemetery, where many stories can be found, about the life and death struggles of the gold rush days.

We leave Cooktown along the Mulligan once again. On our return to Port Douglas we take a short detour to an historic tin mining pub called the Lion’s Den which was built in 1895 (if only the walls could talk in this place). Then its back on the road, destination home and time to reflect on your full and enjoyable day.
